The recent passing of Harvey Pekar put me in mind of American Splendor, a 2003 film based on his autobiographical comics. Pekar appears as himself in some documentary-style scenes and in others is played by Paul Giamatti. The film moves from the real to the recreated to comics-like pictures and animation. It may sound like a mishmash, but in bringing Pekar’s life to film, it works. The Sundance Film Festival awarded it the Grand Jury Prize.
Pekar was an interesting guy and I’d recommend reading at least some of his comics, which were drawn by several notable artists. For a quick introduction, see the film.
